San Mateo, CA – In the early hours of Sunday, August 10, 2025, a multi-vehicle crash on northbound U.S. Highway 101 near the University Avenue off-ramp resulted in a fatality, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the collision occurred around 2:04 AM and involved four vehicles, including a white Acura SUV that was blocking the slow lane prior to the crash.
Authorities said the accident caused a full closure of all northbound lanes near the University Avenue off-ramp. Emergency responders found multiple unconscious patients at the scene and transported them to nearby hospitals, with at least one fatality confirmed.
Traffic management officials coordinated with Caltrans to implement a hard closure and divert traffic to alternate routes while emergency personnel worked to clear the scene.
The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash and is reviewing available footage and witness accounts.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
