San Francisco, CA – On the early morning of Saturday, August 9, 2025, a single-vehicle crash involving a black Volkswagen sedan resulted in fatal injuries, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 7:12 AM on southbound Interstate 280 near the Cesar Chavez Street west on-ramp.

Authorities said the vehicle collided with the center divide, deploying airbags and causing smoke to come from the engine. Emergency responders were notified that occupants were trapped inside the vehicle.

Firefighters and medical personnel arrived quickly and found two patients still inside the sedan. Rescue efforts were initiated at the scene, but one occupant was pronounced dead.

The crash blocked lanes one and two of southbound Interstate 280 near Cesar Chavez, resulting in temporary lane closures. The vehicle was later removed by Bay Bridge Towing.

The California Highway Patrol and San Francisco Fire Department continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
