I-80, SR-13 Crash Kills 1 near Barkley Beach in Berkeley

Berkeley, CA – On the early morning of Sunday, August 3, 2025, a single-vehicle collision resulted in fatal injuries near Barkley Beach, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the crash occurred around 4:10 AM along eastbound Interstate 80 near the State Route 13 connector.

Authorities say the vehicle, described as a minivan, left the roadway and came to rest in a grassy area off the shoulder. Emergency responders arrived on scene shortly after the crash and located the heavily damaged vehicle. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin by the coroner’s office.

The incident required a temporary traffic break to allow fire department personnel to access the area safely. Officials have not indicated what caused the crash or whether impairment or other factors may have contributed. 

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol.
