Fatal Big Rig Crash near Hwy 101, Hellyer Ave in San Jose

San Jose, CA – On the afternoon of Saturday, July 26, 2025, a traffic collision involving a red big rig truck resulted in at least one fatality, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the crash occurred around 3:59 PM on U.S. Highway 101 South near the Hellyer Avenue off-ramp. 

The big rig trailer overturned and landed in the bushes along the right-hand shoulder of the freeway. The vehicle came to rest on its side and prompted a full closure of both the Hellyer on-ramp and off-ramp from the southbound lanes.

Emergency services, including the San Jose Fire Department and medical personnel, responded to the scene. At approximately 4:27 PM, the coroner was notified, confirming the presence of a fatality at the scene.

According to dispatch logs, there were no additional parties involved in the collision. 

The off-ramp remained closed for several hours while authorities conducted their investigation and cleared the wreckage. The on-ramp was eventually reopened by 8:41 PM, while final tow operations continued into the night.

The identity of the deceased individual has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
