Baker, CA – On the early morning of Sunday, June 29, 2025, a head-on collision involving two sedans resulted in at least one fatality, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the crash occurred around 4:22 AM on southbound Interstate 15 near the Zzyzx Road off-ramp. Authorities say one of the vehicles was traveling the wrong direction prior to the collision.
According to officials, the crash involved a red Kia sedan that came to rest on the right-hand shoulder down an embankment and a beige four-door sedan that remained in the center divide with significant front-end and driver-side damage. One vehicle was described as “totaled,” and both vehicles were reported to be disabled in the roadway, partially obstructing traffic.
Initial reports indicated that all southbound lanes of Interstate 15 were blocked for several hours while emergency responders worked at the scene. Caltrans was called in to establish a hard closure and deploy changeable message signs to divert traffic.
CHP did not immediately release the identity of the deceased pending notification of next of kin. The extent of injuries to any other involved parties has not been confirmed.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, including why one vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction. Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol.
Wrongful Death Claims
Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide support to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income.
