Oakland, CA – On the night of Wednesday, June 25, 2025, a fatal collision involving a pedestrian and a big rig occurred on northbound Interstate 880 near the Hegenberger Road westbound on-ramp, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 11:39 PM in the middle lanes of Interstate 880, just south of Hegenberger Road.
Initial reports suggest that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and then by a big rig, which did not stop at the scene. Several vehicles pulled over to the shoulder, and multiple pedestrians were seen on foot near the incident, according to dispatch logs. A SigAlert was issued, and traffic was diverted to the Hegenberger Road off-ramp as authorities managed the investigation and cleanup.
The Alameda County Coroner was contacted, and a rotation tow service was dispatched to retrieve the involved vehicle for evidence.
The identity of the pedestrian has not yet been released, and CHP is continuing its investigation into the incident.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a bicycle accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
