Monterey County, CA – Two people were killed Friday afternoon, June 20, 2025, in a two-vehicle collision on US Highway 101 near Cannon Road, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 3:42 PM when a Ram 2500 pickup overturned in the center divider after colliding with a white sedan on southbound Highway 101. The pickup came to rest on its roof in a ditch between the northbound and southbound lanes, while the other vehicle remained on the right shoulder, also overturned.
CHP logs indicate that at least one of the victims was an elderly woman, who was found unresponsive and trapped inside one of the overturned vehicles. Emergency crews responded to the scene, including multiple tow units and Caltrans, and a SigAlert was issued as all northbound lanes were initially blocked.
Both drivers were declared dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office, pending notification of next of kin.
All lanes of Highway 101 were fully reopened by 7:32 PM after cleanup and investigation. CHP continues to investigate the cause of the collision.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
