Fatal Pedestrian Crash at I-80, Powell St in Emeryville, Alameda County

Alameda County, CA – On the evening of Monday, May 26, 2025, a fatal pedestrian collision occurred on westbound Interstate 80 just west of Powell Street, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports the incident took place around 10:50 PM when a white adult male wearing a blue tracksuit was found lying across two slow lanes of traffic.

Responding officers noted several vehicles had pulled over onto the right shoulder near the scene, and traffic was halted in all lanes, prompting a Sig Alert for the area. The collision involved a BMW SUV that reportedly moved into the pedestrian’s lane from the right shoulder.

Caltrans was called for a hard closure of the roadway, and tow trucks were dispatched to remove the damaged BMW SUV. The westbound lanes remained closed for several hours before reopening after the coroner’s arrival and vehicle removal.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a bicycle accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.

Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
