Multi-Vehicle Crash Results in 1 Fatality, 2 Injuries on I-80, Potrero Ave in San Francisco

San Francisco, CA – On the evening of Saturday, May 24, 2025, a collision involving at least two overturned vehicles resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the crash occurred around 6:14 PM on the westbound side of Interstate 80, just east of the Potrero Avenue on-ramp. Up to eight vehicles may have been part of the incident, with three lanes completely blocked at one point.

Emergency responders, including Richmond Fire Department and paramedics, were dispatched to the scene. The fire department confirmed one fatality and initiated extrication efforts for another individual trapped in a vehicle. Two injured parties were transported to two local hospitals, John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek and Highland Hospital in Oakland.

The crash prompted a full SigAlert, with all lanes of westbound I-80 shut down for an extended period. Caltrans and the Transportation Management Center assisted with traffic control and camera surveillance. As of 8:46 PM, all lanes were reopened and the SigAlert was canceled.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. The collision remains under investigation.

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.  Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
