DUI Suspected after 5 Pedestrians Injured on West Sonora St in Stockton

Stockton, CA – Five adults were hospitalized with injuries after a 62-year-old driver crashed into a group of pedestrians and then struck a utility pole on the afternoon of Sunday, May 18, 2025, according to FOX40.

The Stockton Police Department reports that the accident took place shortly before 4:00 PM in the 500 block of West Sonora Street.

Upon arrival, police located five adult pedestrians — aged 40, 41, 56, 62, and 67 — who had been struck by a vehicle. All five victims were conscious at the scene and were transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Medical officials confirmed that none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The driver of the vehicle, a 62-year-old man whose name has not been released, was discovered unresponsive behind the wheel of the car. First responders administered Narcan, a medication commonly used to reverse the effects of opioid overdose. The driver regained consciousness and was transported for medical attention.

Investigators with the Stockton Police Department say that preliminary information suggests driving under the influence may have played a role in the collision. Officers are conducting a DUI investigation to determine whether the driver was impaired by alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both. Toxicology results are pending.

Authorities emphasized that there is currently no indication the collision was intentional or that the pedestrians were deliberately targeted. SPD officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Traffic in the area was temporarily disrupted as police secured the scene and collected evidence. The vehicle involved was towed from the site, and the pole it struck sustained visible damage.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Stockton Police Department.

California DUI Law

Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”

Duty of Care Toward Pedestrians

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim to ensure they get proper medical treatment and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

Personal Injury Claims

When the actions of reckless drivers cause others to be injured, the cost of recovery should not fall on their victims. Filing a Personal Injury Claim with the at-fault party’s insurance can provide compensation for medical bills and lost wages during recovery.

However, insurance companies often try to deny or minimize claims. That’s why having a knowledgeable personal injury attorney on your side is crucial to securing proper compensation for your injuries.
