I-80, Yolo Causeway Hit-and-Run Kills Elderly Woman Hailing Traffic in Sacramento

Sacramento, CA – In the early hours of Sunday, May 11, 2025, an elderly woman was fatally struck on Interstate 80 East near the Yolo Causeway after she was seen attempting to stop traffic, according to CHP Fatal.

The incident was first reported at approximately 1:37 AM when witnesses described an elderly female standing in the roadway, signaling vehicles to stop. A short time later, she was struck by an unknown vehicle in the eastbound lanes of I-80, just east of Chiles Road.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) dispatch logs indicate that a white sedan with front-end damage may have been involved in a hit-and-run collision and was seen fleeing the area westbound.

Authorities also reported a separate disabled vehicle in the westbound slow lane, which may or may not have been related. The eastbound lanes were shut down as emergency personnel responded, and the Yolo County Coroner’s Office was notified and arrived on scene shortly after.

Traffic was diverted through the center divide for a time, with Caltrans called to assist. By 4:30 AM, all lanes were reopened.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident as a possible hit-and-run. Anyone with information about the vehicle or driver involved is urged to contact CHP Woodland Area Office.

California Hit-and-Run Laws

California Law requires drivers involved in a collision to stop their vehicle, notify law enforcement, and exchange insurance information with others involved. Failure to do so, considered to be a “hit-and-run,” is a misdemeanor in cases of property damage and a felony when someone has been injured.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a bicycle accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.

Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
