Oakland, CA – On the afternoon of Saturday, May 10, 2025, a two-vehicle traffic collision resulted in at least one fatality and multiple injuries, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 5:20 PM near the westbound lanes of Interstate 580, just west of the State Route 24 connector and close to the Broadway off-ramp.
The collision involved a white Jeep Cherokee and a silver van. The van came to rest in the center divide, while the Jeep sustained visible damage. Authorities confirmed that at least one person died at the scene. A second individual suffered injuries and was transported by ambulance to Highland Hospital for treatment.
Following the crash, all westbound lanes of Interstate 580 were shut down temporarily as emergency personnel responded, evaluated the scene, and cleared the wreckage. Tow trucks were called to remove the damaged vehicles, and traffic was diverted for several hours, causing significant delays in the area.
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest that a possible medical emergency may have played a role in triggering the collision.
The identity of the deceased victim has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol. This is an ongoing investigation.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
