Fatal SUV Rollover at SR-85, Almaden Expy in San Jose

San Jose, CA – On the evening of Sunday, May 4, 2025, one person was killed in a single-vehicle crash involving a black SUV that overturned on the southbound State Route 85 off-ramp to Almaden Expressway, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the fatal crash was reported around 8:07 PM when a black Volkswagen Tiguan collided with an embankment and overturned, landing on its side. The vehicle came to rest in the slow lane and partially on the right-hand shoulder, initially blocking multiple lanes. Passersby stopped to assist before emergency crews arrived.

San Jose Fire Department personnel responded and discovered one individual pinned beneath the overturned SUV. The victim, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:30 PM.

Traffic in the area was heavily impacted, with all lanes blocked for an extended period as the scene was cleared and investigators worked to determine the cause of the crash. A tow truck was dispatched to remove the vehicle as evidence, and all lanes were eventually reopened shortly before midnight.

CHP is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
