Fatal Rollover Crash on I-40 in Needles, San Bernardino County

Needles, CA – On the morning of Sunday, May 4, 2025, one person was killed in a rollover crash on westbound Interstate 40 near mile marker 30, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the collision was first reported around 7:46 AM when passing motorists spotted a vehicle on its side and visible from the roadway. The crash involved a brown Chevrolet Silverado, which came to rest on the right shoulder. One individual was seen partially ejected from the vehicle.

Emergency responders from San Bernardino County and local fire agencies arrived at the scene. Authorities initiated a partial closure of the westbound lanes to accommodate an incoming medical helicopter. Mercy Air landed around 8:36 AM; however, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the airlift was ultimately not utilized.

The San Bernardino County Coroner was notified and estimated to arrive from Needles within two hours. CHP requested an evidence tow for the vehicle, which was later removed by American Tow. Caltrans cleared the scene shortly after.

The westbound lanes were partially reopened as the investigation and recovery efforts concluded later that afternoon. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
