Pinole, CA – On the morning of Thursday, March 27, 2025, a multi-vehicle collision on eastbound Interstate 80 at the Pomona Street off-ramp resulted in a fatality, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the crash occurred around 3:52 AM and involved multiple vehicles, including a big rig with a white cab and blue and green stripes. Initial reports indicate that a silver Volvo V90 station wagon carrying a surfboard and a silver sedan were also involved. The collision left several vehicles blocking the fast lane and center divide.
Emergency responders, including CHP officers and the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department, arrived at the scene to assess the damage and divert traffic. A SigAlert was issued at 4:31 AM, closing all eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 and redirecting vehicles to Cummings Skyway.
The CHP confirmed a fatality at 4:34 AM, though the identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. The coroner was dispatched to the scene at 4:42 AM.
The incident required heavy-duty tow trucks to remove wreckage, including the big rig, which was carrying an estimated 85,000 to 90,000 pounds of cargo.
By 7:36 AM, officials were working to reopen lanes, and at 8:27 AM, the SigAlert was canceled with all lanes fully reopened.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with additional information to contact the CHP.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
