Fresno, CA — The victims’ families have identified 20-year-old Sandy Carmona and 18-year-old Luis Carmona Rodriguez as 2 of the 4 killed in a suspected DUI collision on January 10, 2025, according to ABC30.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident took place around 10:35 PM at the intersection of Floyd and Shaw Avenues.
According to investigators, a Ford Econoline van traveling south on Floyd Avenue stopped at a stop sign but proceeded into the intersection without yielding to a westbound Nissan Altima on Shaw Avenue. The vehicles collided, veering off the road and catching fire on the southwest shoulder of the intersection.
Both occupants of the Nissan and two individuals in the Ford were pronounced dead at the scene. Two male passengers in the Nissan, aged 32 and 35, escaped the vehicle before it was engulfed in flames. They suffered moderate injuries and were treated at the scene.
The driver of the Ford, identified as 32-year-old Sean Allen Larry Guynes, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and is facing charges, including four counts of murder. Authorities confirmed Guynes had a suspended license due to a prior DUI conviction.
Sandy Carmona and Luis Carmona Rodriguez, who were cousins, were returning home at the time of the collision. Both had recently begun pursuing their careers, with Sandy aspiring to work as an ultrasound technician and Luis recently earning his barber’s license.
GoFundMe accounts for Sandy and Luis have been established to assist the families with funeral and related expenses.
California DUI Law
Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”
Wrongful Death Claims
Losing a loved one in a traffic accident is devastating, and the pain can be made worse by the financial strain that often follows. Medical bills, funeral costs, and the loss of income to support dependents of the deceased can leave families struggling.
Filing a Wrongful Death claim against those responsible can provide compensation to help with these expenses. However, insurance companies will always try to pay as little as possible, making it difficult for families to receive the full amount they deserve.
This is why having an experienced personal injury attorney is essential so that they can fight to make sure you receive fair compensation and justice for your loved one.
