Crash with Big Rig Kills Pedestrian on I-5 near Sutterville Rd in Sacramento

Sacramento, CA – Early Thursday morning, January 9, 2025, a pedestrian was fatally struck by a big rig on Interstate 5 according to The Sacramento Bee.

Witnesses reported that the individual, described as a woman, was attempting to cross the northbound lanes of the freeway just north of the Sutterville Road offramp around 5:30 AM. She was seen moving from the center divide toward traffic and then back toward the divide before being hit by the truck.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been confirmed.

The collision prompted a full closure of the northbound lanes of I-5 at Sutterville Road. Traffic was backed up beyond Fruitridge Road, and a SigAlert was issued between 5:45 AM and 8 AM while authorities investigated and cleared the scene.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is continuing its investigation into the incident, and no further details have been released at this time.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.

Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.

If you or someone you love was harmed in an accident like the one described here, feel free to contact Maison Law for any questions or to receive a no-cost, no-obligation case assessment.
