Wheeler Ridge, CA – A driver lost their life early Sunday morning, December 22, 2024, after their big rig veered off Interstate 5 and plunged into an aqueduct, according to KBAK.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident occurred at approximately 4:57 AM. CHP Fort Tejon Area units responded to reports of a big rig that had become almost entirely submerged in the aqueduct near northbound I-5.
Emergency personnel arrived to find the vehicle in the canal. Investigators stated the big rig had been traveling northbound on Interstate 5 when it veered to the right for reasons yet to be determined. The vehicle broke through barriers and crashed into the aqueduct.
Additional emergency responders were called to assist in the recovery efforts. After the submerged big rig was removed from the water, authorities confirmed that the driver, whose identity has not yet been released, had died at the scene.
The CHP is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Fort Tejon Area office.
Single-Vehicle Collisions and Comparative Negligence
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility.
California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages. A personal injury attorney can play a critical role in sorting through these details to help victims and their families get the compensation they deserve.
