Nikko Hill, 30, Michael Trenner, 33, Killed in Box Truck Crash on I-5 near Pelier Rd in San Joaquin County

San Joaquin County, CA — Two Santa Clara residents have been identified as the victims of a fatal box truck collision that occurred Thursday afternoon, December 19, 2024, according to ABC10.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the single-vehicle accident took place around 12:40 PM on the southbound side of I-5, just north of Peltier Road. The truck, a two-axle vehicle, drifted off the roadway and collided with a large tree.

The impact claimed the lives of 30-year-old Nikko Hill and 33-year-old Michael Trenner, both passengers in the vehicle. Hill, seated in the front passenger seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. Trenner, who was sitting in the rear passenger seat, sustained critical injuries and was transported to the hospital, where he later died.

CHP investigators noted that the collision was severe enough to peel back the cab’s right side, exposing the interior of the truck. Despite indications that they had been wearing seat belts, both Hill and Trenner were ejected from the vehicle.

The driver of the truck, who suffered minor injuries, told officers he had been traveling at 65 MPH in the number one lane before shifting into the number two lane. He stated that he overcorrected, causing the vehicle to drift off the road onto the dirt shoulder, where it struck the tree.

A fourth occupant, seated behind the driver, sustained significant but non-life-threatening injuries.

CHP confirmed that neither alcohol nor drugs were contributing factors in the crash. The victims’ identities were officially released Sunday by the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Passenger Liability

Driver liability insurance covers both those outside the vehicle and passengers inside. While it can be emotionally difficult to file a Wrongful Death claim against someone close to the victim, the financial challenges after an accident can be overwhelming.

A skilled personal injury attorney can help families pursue proper compensation for their loss by handling these legal complexities and negotiating with insurance companies, who always try to reduce payouts on claims they cannot deny.
