Brentwood, CA — A 17-year-old driver was arrested early Saturday morning, December 6, 2024, in Contra Costa County on charges of vehicular manslaughter after crashing his vehicle into a security booth, killing one guard and seriously injuring another, according to NBC Bay Area.
The accident occurred just before midnight near the gated Discovery Bay community, about two miles east of Brentwood.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the teen was driving a Hyundai Santa Cruz eastbound on Balfour Road when he allegedly ran the intersection at Bixler Road and collided with the security booth.
Two guards were inside at the time. One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other suffered major injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The names of the victims have not been released, pending notification of their families.
The teenage driver was briefly hospitalized as a precaution before being taken into custody and booked into Contra Costa County Juvenile Hall.
The CHP stated that intoxication does not appear to be a factor in the crash, but the investigation is ongoing, and no official cause has been determined. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact CHP investigators.
