Natomas, CA – A woman was struck and killed by a motorist allegedly driving under the influence near a South Natomas intersection on Friday evening, November 29, 2024, according to The Sacramento Bee.
Sacramento Police officers responded to the incident just before 8 PM near the intersection of Northgate Boulevard and Turnstone Drive. Upon arrival, they found both the pedestrian and the driver, a 50-year-old man.
Officers administered emergency medical aid to the victim until Sacramento Fire Department personnel arrived. Despite their efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
After determining the driver was under the influence, officers arrested him and transported him to the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he was booked on DUI charges.
The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of her family by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
The Sacramento Police Department’s Major Collision Investigations Unit and crime scene investigators took over the case, conducting a thorough investigation, including canvassing the area and interviewing witnesses.
The intersection, located near the Foods Co. grocery store in the South Natomas and Gardenland neighborhoods, reopened early Saturday morning.
California DUI Law
Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
