Alberto Rodriguez, 24, Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash involving 2 Big Rigs on I-5 in Fresno County

Fresno County, CA – According to KSEE, 24-year-old Alberto Rodriguez from Menlo Park was killed in a multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 early Monday morning, December 2, 2024.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the crash occurred at approximately 12:05 AM on the northbound side of I-5.

According to CHP investigators, a 2025 Volvo big rig traveling at about 60 miles per hour failed to slow for traffic ahead. The Volvo collided with the rear of a 2011 Subaru Outback, which was stopped behind a stationary 2023 Freightliner big rig.

The force of the collision caused the Subaru to be crushed between the two larger vehicles. Rodriguez, who was a passenger in the Subaru, died at the scene.

Five other individuals in the Subaru, including the driver, sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Emergency responders transported them to local hospitals for treatment. Authorities confirmed that the drivers of the Volvo and Freightliner, as well as a passenger in the Volvo, were not injured.

Investigators are working to determine why the driver of the Volvo failed to stop in time. They have not yet indicated whether alcohol, drugs, or distracted driving played a role in the crash.

Wrongful Death Claims

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Liability rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. A personal injury attorney can play a crucial role in helping victims establish legal responsibility after a traffic accident.

Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
