UPDATE: Anabel Marie Ramirez, 12, ID’ed as the Young Girl Killed in Suspected DUI Crash at South Union Ave, Hosking Ave in Bakersfield

Bakersfield, CA — Anabel Marie Ramirez has been identified as the 12-year-old girl killed in a suspected DUI crash Friday night, November 22, 2024, at the intersection of South Union Avenue and Hosking Avenue, according to KGET.

Anabel was a passenger in a Honda sedan with an 11-year-old boy when their vehicle was struck by a Chevrolet SUV around 7:24 PM. Both children suffered severe injuries and were rushed to Kern Medical. Despite efforts to save her, Anabel passed away about 90 minutes later, according to the Kern County Coroner’s Office.

The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 35-year-old Diego Godinez, was arrested on suspicion of DUI, reckless driving, and gross vehicular manslaughter. Bakersfield police allege Godinez was speeding and under the influence of alcohol when he caused the crash.

Anabel’s death underscores the devastating impact of impaired driving, leaving her family and community grieving a life taken far too soon.

California DUI Law

Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”

Wrongful Death Claims

Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This compensation can help cover medical bills, funeral costs, and lost income that the family depended on.

However, insurance companies will always try to pay as little as possible, making it difficult for families to receive the full amount they deserve. So, having an experienced personal injury attorney is essential to receive fair compensation and justice for your loved one.
