Salinas, CA – Three young people, two teenagers and a toddler, were injured Tuesday evening, November 19, 2024, when a big rig collided with a car on Highway 101 near Somavia Road, just south of Salinas, according to KSBW.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the big rig was traveling southbound on Highway 101 around 5:32 PM when it attempted to turn left onto Somavia Road. During the turn, it crossed into the northbound lanes and into the path of a Ford sedan. The Ford crashed into the truck’s trailer and became stuck underneath.
First responders, including firefighters, used hydraulic rescue tools to free the 17-year-old female driver, who sustained major injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in stable condition. CHP stated she was unlicensed, and it is unclear if she had a learner’s permit.
A 14-year-old male passenger sustained minor injuries, while a 4-year-old girl in a child seat was airlifted to a Bay Area hospital with minor injuries. The toddler was freed by Good Samaritans, and the male passenger exited the vehicle on his own. The driver of the big rig was uninjured.
CHP does not believe drugs or alcohol were involved and is investigating the cause of the crash. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact authorities.
Personal Injury Claims
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Liability rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. A personal injury attorney can play a crucial role in helping victims establish legal responsibility after a traffic accident.
If it is found that another party contributed to the injuries, victims may be eligible to file a personal injury claim with the responsible party’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover damages such as hospital bills and lost income during recovery.
