Bakersfield, CA — According to KBAK, the Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified 16-year-old Ulicer Alesander Perez Jimenes of Lamont as the young driver who lost his life in a canal crash in southwest Bakersfield on September 29, 2024.
The crash took place in the early hours along Cottonwood Road, south of Panama Lane, when Jimenes’s vehicle veered off the road and into a canal, where it became submerged.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Jimenes was driving a 2014 Toyota southbound on Cottonwood Road around 1:10 AM when, for reasons still under investigation, the car left the roadway in a southwestern direction.
The Toyota entered the canal, and Jimenes, unable to escape the submerged vehicle, drowned. The coroner’s office confirmed his cause of death as drowning and ruled it an accident.
Two passengers in the Toyota, an 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, managed to escape from the vehicle. The male passenger sustained minor injuries, while the female passenger reported no injuries.
Single-Vehicle Collisions and Comparative Negligence
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility.
California’s “Comparative Negligence” rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages. A personal injury attorney can play a critical role in sorting through these details to help victims and their families get the compensation they deserve.
