Stockton, CA — According to KCRA, the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner has identified Jazmine Floris, a 23-year-old Stockton resident who identified as non-binary and was known as “Jay” to friends and family, as the pedestrian who was fatally struck by a vehicle near Delta College on Thursday evening, October 24, 2024.
The accident occurred around 6:30 PM near the well-known Pacific Avenue marquee sign, just steps from the Delta College campus, where Jay was struck by a car while walking along Pacific Avenue. Emergency responders quickly transported them to a nearby hospital, where, despite extensive efforts by the medical team, Jay later succumbed to their injuries.
According to Stockton Police, the driver, 27-year-old Jamaraqui Burks, allegedly fled the scene but was apprehended soon after. Burks sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the hospital before being taken to the San Joaquin County Jail. Authorities have not released details on the charges, but the investigation is ongoing.
Wrongful Death Claims
Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This compensation can help cover medical bills, funeral costs, and lost income that the family depended on.
However, insurance companies will always try to pay as little as possible, making it difficult for families to receive the full amount they deserve. So, having an experienced personal injury attorney is essential to receive fair compensation and justice for your loved one.
California Hit-and-Run Laws
California Law requires drivers involved in a collision to stop their vehicle, notify law enforcement, and exchange insurance information with others involved. Failure to do so, considered to be a “hit-and-run,” is a misdemeanor in cases of property damage and a felony when someone has been injured.
