Loss of Ricardo Aguilar, 8, while Crossing Bank St near Roosevelt Elementary Prompts Demands for Improved Safety in Bakersfield

Bakersfield, CA – An 8-year-old boy, identified as Ricardo Aguilar, passed away Friday morning, October 18, 2024, after being struck by a car near Roosevelt Elementary School two days before, according to KGET with additional reporting from KBAK.

Ricardo, the second of three children, was crossing Bank Street near his home on Wednesday afternoon, October 16, when the accident occurred. A neighbor’s surveillance video captured the heartbreaking moment when Ricardo was hit by a gray sedan that had stopped at a stop sign before accelerating and striking him.

Despite the best efforts of doctors in both Bakersfield and Madera, Ricardo succumbed to his injuries, leaving his family to grapple with the loss of a bright, young life.

The accident has highlighted concerns about traffic safety in the area surrounding Roosevelt Elementary. Local residents and family members of Ricardo, including his mother’s best friend and cousin, have called for urgent safety measures to prevent future incidents.

Bakersfield City Councilmember Andrae Gonzales, who visited the scene of the crash, acknowledged the community’s concerns and vowed to push for enhanced traffic safety measures. Residents have long requested these changes, expressing frustration at the lack of action before this incident.

Ricardo’s loved ones shared fond memories of his vibrant personality, recalling how much joy he brought to those around him. He was described by his family as an outgoing and eccentric boy who dreamed of becoming a chef.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Ricardo’s family cover funeral expenses and support them through this difficult time.

The Bakersfield Police Department is still investigating the incident, though they have confirmed that intoxication and speed do not appear to have been factors.

Wrongful Death Claims

Losing a loved one in a traffic accident is devastating, and the pain can be made worse by the financial strain that often follows. Medical bills, funeral costs, and the loss of income to support dependents of the deceased can leave families struggling.

Filing a Wrongful Death claim against those responsible can provide compensation to help with these expenses. However, insurance companies will always try to pay as little as possible, making it difficult for families to receive the full amount they deserve.

This is why having an experienced personal injury attorney is essential so that they can fight to make sure you receive fair compensation and justice for your loved one.

Stop Sign Laws

California Law requires drivers to come to a complete stop at a Stop sign (California Vehicle Code 22450). Drivers may only enter the intersection when it appears safe for all parties to do so (California Vehicle Code 21802).
