Santa Maria Man, 30, Killed in Hwy 101 Multi-Vehicle Crash in Nipomo; DUI Suspect Dylan Lossing, 20, Arrested

Nipomo, CA – Dylan Lossing, a 20-year-old from Orcutt, faces multiple charges, including DUI and manslaughter after a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 101 early Sunday morning, October 13, 2024, claimed the life of a 30-year-old man from Santa Maria, according to The San Luis Obispo Tribune.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident occurred around 2:10 AM when Lossing, allegedly driving at a high rate of speed, failed to slow down for stopped traffic near the Highway 166 off-ramp. His Honda collided with the rear of a 2012 Nissan Altima driven by the Santa Maria man.

The impact pushed the Nissan forward into a black GMC Sierra driven by 53-year-old Leticia Fernandez from Bakersfield. The Nissan overturned due to the force of the collision.

Lossing’s Honda continued moving and crashed into a Chrysler Pacifica driven by 61-year-old Trisha Norris from Santa Maria. Fernandez and Norris were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The Santa Maria man was rushed to Marian Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Lossing was treated for his injuries and then arrested. Authorities believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.

Lossing remains in custody at San Luis Obispo County Jail, where he faces charges of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. Investigators are still piecing together the details of the collision.

Wrongful Death Claims

Losing a loved one in a traffic accident is devastating, and the pain can be made worse by the financial strain that often follows. Medical bills, funeral costs, and the loss of income to support dependents of the deceased can leave families struggling.

Filing a Wrongful Death claim against those responsible can provide compensation to help with these expenses. However, insurance companies will always try to pay as little as possible, making it difficult for families to receive the full amount they deserve.

This is why having an experienced personal injury attorney is essential so that they can fight to make sure you receive fair compensation and justice for your loved one.

California DUI Law

Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”
