Oakley, CA – An Oakley police officer was injured Saturday evening, October 12, 2024, after a stolen vehicle, driven by 29-year-old Devon Singleton of Antioch, crashed head-on into his patrol car during a chaotic pursuit, according to KTVU.
The incident occurred around 6:10 PM when officers were searching for a stolen car near East Cypress Road, according to the Oakley Police Department.
Officers spotted Singleton speeding down Jersey Island Road. Despite police deploying spike strips to slow him down, Singleton continued driving as fast as his deflating tires would allow. A woman, whose identity has not been released, was also in the vehicle with Singleton.
As Singleton approached the intersection of East Cypress Road and Knightsen Avenue, two officers, including a sergeant, were in position near a Valero gas station. Concerned about the safety of the moderate traffic in the area and patrons at the gas station, the sergeant placed himself between the station and Singleton’s erratic path. Moments later, Singleton’s vehicle collided head-on with the sergeant’s patrol car.
The sergeant was briefly trapped inside his car but managed to free himself and arrest Singleton. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment and released a few hours later. Oakley Police Chief Paul Beard expressed gratitude that the officer is expected to make a full recovery, thanking both the officers involved and the local community for their support.
Singleton sustained injuries in the crash and was airlifted to a hospital. After being released from medical care, he was arrested and booked on multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, and felony evading.
The woman who was a passenger in the stolen vehicle was also taken to the hospital. Her condition remains unknown, and it’s unclear if she will face charges.
Personal Injury Claims
Regardless of whether or not a collision results in criminal charges, when the actions of reckless drivers cause others to be injured, the cost of recovery should not fall on their victims. Filing a claim with the at-fault driver’s insurance can provide compensation for medical bills and lost wages during recovery.
However, insurance companies often try to deny or minimize claims. That’s why having a knowledgeable personal injury attorney on your side is crucial to securing proper compensation for your injuries.
