UPDATE: Woman Killed in Santa Margarita Single-Vehicle Crash on Hwy 229 Identified as Trista Loftus, 21

Santa Margarita, CA – The California Highway Patrol has identified the woman killed in a crash early Thursday morning, September 12, 2024, on Highway 58 as 21-year-old Trista Loftus of Nipomo, according to The San Luis Obispo Tribune.

Loftus was driving a 1997 Ford F-150 east of Highway 229 when the vehicle overturned. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported Loftus to Adventist Health Sierra Vista Hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.

In the aftermath of her death, Loftus’ family and friends took to social media to remember her. Loftus, who was well-known in San Luis Obispo County, had gained local fame as a child for her skills in mixed martial arts (MMA).

A GoFundMe campaign has been created to assist the family with funeral expenses and to establish a memorial fund in honor of Loftus.

Liability in Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road conditions share some responsibility. A personal injury attorney plays a critical role in sorting through these details to help victims and their families get the compensation they deserve.

Once liability is determined, the attorney can negotiate with insurance companies, who often try to reduce payouts. That means having legal representation can be vital to ensure victims receive fair compensation for their loss.
