Burlingame, CA – On September 12, 2024, 49-year-old Yolanda Villar was killed after being struck by a vehicle while crossing an intersection near the border of Burlingame and San Mateo, according to KRON.
The fatal accident occurred around 6:22 PM at the intersection of Peninsula Avenue and Dwight Road. Authorities say Villar was walking across Peninsula Avenue when a vehicle making a left turn hit her. Despite efforts to save her life, Villar was pronounced dead at a nearby trauma center shortly after the collision.
Yolanda Villar was the primary caregiver for her 18-year-old daughter, Stephanie, who has special needs. Her family described her as a “fierce advocate” and “great protector” for her daughter, and friends noted how her entire life revolved around ensuring Stephanie was cared for, loved, and safe.
A GoFundMe created for the family explained that Yolanda’s sister now faces the overwhelming responsibility of raising Stephanie, along with her own son, who also has special needs.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a specific “Duty of Care” towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, support for dependents of the deceased, and other related damages.
If the at-fault driver avoids legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
