Natomas, CA – According to KCRA, Councilmember Lisa Kaplan announced changes to the intersection of Banfield Drive and Club Center Drive in Natomas after a series of crashes, including a recent incident in which a pedestrian was killed in a collision with a Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) bus on September 9, 2024.
Kaplan addressed the issue during a community meeting held Monday night, September 16, 2024, at The Club at Natomas Park. The meeting served as a platform for discussing traffic changes and addressing community concerns. Natomas residents expressed their frustrations with the current infrastructure, and Kaplan outlined safety measures intended to address these issues.
The city’s immediate plans to repaint the crosswalks at Banfield Drive and Club Center Drive, which will be updated to resemble crosswalks typically seen in school zones, with yellow ladder stripes designed to catch the attention of drivers and encourage them to slow down.
In addition to these changes, the Sacramento Police Department intends to conduct a traffic operation in the area before the end of September 2024. Residents were informed they can request investigations into specific intersections and traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps, by calling 311.
The ongoing dialogue between Natomas residents and city officials signals a concerted effort to improve pedestrian safety in an area that has seen too many accidents.
Duty of Care Toward Pedestrians
Drivers have a specific “Duty of Care” towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim to ensure they get proper medical treatment and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those injured in a pedestrian accident, filing a Personal Injury claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills and other related damages.
If the at-fault driver avoids legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
