Fresno, CA – A bicyclist identified as 41-year-old Luciano Becerra Garcia lost his life in an early morning accident on Highway 41 north of Shields Avenue in Fresno on Friday, September 13, 2024, according to The Fresno Bee.
Around 4:45 AM Garcia was reportedly heading south in the northbound lanes of Highway 41. Meanwhile, a 19-year-old driver from Sanger operating a 2013 Chevrolet Impala was traveling in the fast lane and struck Garcia, throwing him across the lanes of traffic.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported Garcia to Community Regional Medical Center. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The driver of the Impala remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities during their investigation. CHP officials have not indicated that drugs or alcohol were involved, and the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities continue to investigate the details surrounding the accident and have not yet determined why Garcia was riding in the fast lane. They are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has additional information to come forward.
Bicycle Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a specific “Duty of Care” towards bicyclists, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a bicycle accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
If the at-fault driver avoids legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
