Industrial Ave Bicycle Hit-and-Run Injures 1 in Placer County, Leads to Arrest of Suspected Fairfield Man

Placer County, CA — The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has apprehended a Solano County man suspected of a hit-and-run with a female bicyclist on Sunday, August 4, 2024, in Placer County, according to The Sacramento Bee.

At approximately 4:15 AM two bicyclists were riding on the right shoulder along Industrial Avenue near Lon McAnally, just west of Highway 65, in an unincorporated area between Roseville and Lincoln.

Meanwhile, a silver Nissan sedan was also traveling Industrial Avenue when it drifted onto the right shoulder and collided with one of the bicyclists near West Sunset Boulevard. The Nissan fled the scene before authorities arrived. The injured bicyclist, a woman, was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where she was treated for life-threatening injuries.

The CHP released a photograph of the suspect’s silver Nissan sedan, along with a possible license plate number. That afternoon, CHP officers located the Nissan in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Fairfield.

Evidence gathered during the investigation pointed to a 28-year-old man from Fairfield as the driver involved in the hit-and-run. He was subsequently arrested and charged.

California Hit-and-Run Laws

California Law requires drivers involved in a collision to stop their vehicle, notify law enforcement, and exchange insurance information with others involved. Failure to do so, considered to be a “hit-and-run,” is a misdemeanor in cases of property damage and a felony when someone has been injured.

Duty of Care Toward Bicyclists

Drivers owe a “Duty of Care” to bicyclists regardless of where they encounter them. This legal obligation arises from the fact that bicyclists have less protection while navigating alongside heavier and faster vehicles like cars, trucks, and SUVs. Motorists are required by law to be vigilant on the roads, in all mirrors and blind spots, for any nearby riders. Drivers must be prepared to brake to avoid any potential collisions.

Moreover, drivers must immediately stop in the event of a collision to seek prompt medical attention for the bicyclist. Staying at the scene, activating hazard lights, and blocking traffic can also help prevent further harm by reducing the risk of the victim being struck by oncoming motorists who might not see an injured bicyclist on the road.
