Paso Robles, CA – On Thursday, August 1, 2024, authorities released the identities of the married couple who lost their lives in a head-on collision on Highway 46 near Highway 41, as 83-year-old Helmut Stich and 72-year-old Karen Stich both residents of Paso Robles, according to The San Luis Obispo Tribune.
The fatal accident took place just after midnight on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. The Stiches were traveling westbound on Highway 46 East in their 2020 Hyundai, approximately four miles east of the Cholame “Y,” a well-known intersection in the area.
Helmut was driving the vehicle at around 55 mph, following a tractor-trailer, when he decided to pass it. In doing so, the Hyundai moved into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a 2005 Ford F350 driven by Grant McKenzie of San Diego.
McKenzie was immediately transported to Adventist Health Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo with serious injuries. According to the CHP, impairment is not suspected to have played a role in the crash.
The area where the accident occurred is known for its scenic yet challenging driving conditions. Highway 46, often referred to as the “Blood Alley” due to its history of severe accidents, runs through rolling hills and vineyard-covered landscapes.
