Salinas, CA – According to KSBW, on Friday evening, July 26, 2024, a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run resulted in the death of a 3-year-old child (previously reported as having been 2-years-old) who has been identified as Fermin Maldonado and left his father with significant injuries. Fermin’s mother Martina Maldonado, who is seven months pregnant, now faces both the emotional pain of losing her son and the financial burden of her husband’s medical expenses.
The collision occurred at approximately 6:30 PM at the intersection of East Alisal Street and Wood Street. The suspect’s vehicle, described as a maroon Hyundai Sonata from the late 2000s with noticeable front-end damage, was located the next morning. Despite the discovery of the vehicle, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Salinas Police Department.
Witnesses reported that Fermin had just received a haircut with his father moments before the accident. According to the barber, Fermin had told his father twice in Spanish, “You look gorgeous.” The father, who also sustained injuries in the incident, is expected to survive. The family is now seeking justice for Fermin.
Salinas police have obtained substantial surveillance footage from the scene, including images of a red car believed to be involved in the crash. Witnesses described how the car sped through a red light and failed to stop as the family crossed the crosswalk.
A memorial of flowers and toys is growing at the site of the accident on East Alisal Street, serving as a poignant reminder of the young boy’s life cut short. The community remains hopeful that justice will be served as the search for the driver continues.
Wrongful Death Claims
While no amount of money can bring back loved ones lost in a vehicular fatality, the emotional toll of such a loss is often compounded by the financial burden that falls on surviving family members.
Filing a Wrongful Death claim with the insurance provider of those who bear even partial liability can provide compensation to help cover medical expenses, burial costs, and the loss of support for the deceased’s dependents.
Insurance companies have a vested interest in minimizing the payouts for claims. Therefore, the expertise of a skilled personal injury attorney is crucial in securing fair compensation and justice for the deceased.
