Rancho Murieta, CA — A high-speed chase ended in a crash that left five people hospitalized on Monday evening, July 29, 2024, according to The Sacramento Bee.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that the incident began with a report of a speeding Hyundai Elantra in Amador County and culminated in a fiery collision in Rancho Murieta.
According to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, the crash occurred around 8:15 PM at the intersection of Jackson Road and Murieta Parkway. The CHP noted that the chase started just before 8 PM when officers attempted to stop the Hyundai Elantra, which was later found to be stolen, for speeding in Amador County.
The driver, a 30-year-old man, refused to yield, leading officers on a chase along Highway 49 and onto Highway 16 westbound into Sacramento County. The Hyundai, traveling at approximately 80 mph, collided with a Rivian RS1 driven by a woman heading southbound on Murieta Parkway.
The impact caused the Hyundai to catch fire. CHP officers at the scene managed to rescue the driver and his female passenger from the burning vehicle. Both were transported to hospitals for emergency treatment.
The driver was flown to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, while the passenger was taken to a nearby hospital. The driver of the Rivian and her two passengers suffered moderate injuries and were also taken to the hospital for treatment.
Photos from the scene show extensive damage to both vehicles, with the Hyundai exhibiting severe front-end damage and the Rivian showing significant impact on the driver’s side.
While no alcohol was found in the Hyundai, the investigation into possible drug impairment is ongoing. The officers on the scene had limited interaction with the driver of the Hyundai before he was airlifted for surgery.
Personal Injury Claims
When the actions of reckless drivers cause injuries to others, the cost of caring for those injuries should not fall on the victims. Filing a claim with the at-fault driver’s insurance provider can offer compensation to help cover medical bills and the time taken off work to recover.
However, insurance companies have a vested interest in denying or minimizing claims. This is why the assistance of a knowledgeable personal injury attorney can make all the difference.
