Montecito, CA – A birthday celebration at Fernald Point Beach and Sharks Cove in Montecito turned tragic on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, when an Amtrak train struck and killed 15-year-old Ryan Bradley Chapman of Santa Barbara, KEYT reports.
The fatal incident occurred around 1:40 PM. Montecito Fire Protection District and Amtrak workers have not disclosed the direction in which the train was traveling. Investigators remained at the scene for several hours, attempting to establish what details led up to this terrible loss of a young life.
Chapman had just completed his freshman year at Santa Barbara High School. His friends, devastated by the loss, were escorted home by their parents as train traffic resumed on Wednesday evening.
Beach access in this area is available via Posilipo Lane, with a walkway leading to the sand south of Miramar Beach. However, Fernald Cove, a gated community, has a known shortcut along the railroad tracks leading to the beach, which has been a cause for concern among residents.
This is not the first fatal accident along these tracks. In March 2017, another tragic incident claimed the life of an 18-year-old Santa Barbara High School senior.
In response to this tragedy, Santa Barbara High School has set up a Compassion Center for students and their families to mourn the loss. The center will be open from 9 AM to 3 PM in the Alumni Room for the remainder of the week. As the community mourns the loss of Chapman, it calls for immediate action to enhance safety in the area.
