Fatal Vehicle vs. Bicycle Crash at Stanislaus St, Van Ness Ave in Fresno

Fresno, CA — According to The Fresno Bee, a bicyclist was killed Sunday afternoon, June 2, 2024, in a downtown Fresno collision.

Officers of the Fresno Police Department responded to the scene at 1:17 PM at the intersection of Stanislaus Street and Van Ness Avenue following multiple reports of a bicyclist down in the roadway.

Upon arrival, officers found a man, believed to be in his 50s, suffering from severe injuries. He was quickly transported to Community Regional Medical Center but, unfortunately, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Fresno police Lt. Steve Card indicated that the bicyclist may have made an unsafe turn, which could have been a contributing factor to the collision. However, the investigation is still in its early stages. The motorist involved in the collision remained at the scene and cooperated fully with the authorities, even attempting to aid the injured bicyclist before officers arrived.

Authorities have confirmed that alcohol and drugs do not appear to have played a role in the incident.

Bicyclist Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Motorists are required to exercise an additional “duty of care” towards bicyclists due to their heightened vulnerability in car accidents, which more often result in bicyclist fatalities. Motorists are expected to stay with injured bicyclists to help secure help from emergency services and cooperate with authorities once they arrive.

Those who lose their loved one to a vehicular fatality should know that a Wrongful Death Claim, made with the help of a knowledgeable personal injury attorney, can provide compensation to address the financial burden of medical bills, burial fees, and the loss of income to support any dependents of the deceased.

Should the at-fault driver escape justice, compensation may be available from a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine what the best options are.
