Ayanna Akilah Thomas, 22, Killed in Pedestrian Crash at I-5, Hwy 50 in Upper Land Park, Sacramento

Sacramento, CA — A collision in the early hours of Sunday morning, May 19, 2024, resulted in the death of a female pedestrian identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as 22-year-old Sacramento woman Ayanna Akilah Thomas, according to The Sacramento Bee.

The collision occurred around 12:40 AM on the northbound Interstate 5 on-ramp to the Highway 50 portion of the Capital City Freeway in the Upper Land Park area. Officers arrived at the scene to find that a woman, later identified as Thomas, had been struck by a white Toyota traveling approximately 65 mph. Despite the efforts of Sacramento Fire Department personnel, Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene.

The adult female driver of the Toyota informed officers that Thomas suddenly appeared in front of her vehicle, and she was unable to stop in time. The impact from the collision resulted in severe damage to the Toyota’s left bumper, windshield, and side mirror, but the driver was not injured.

Initial investigations by the CHP determined that alcohol and drugs were not factors in the crash, and no arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.

Wrongful Death Claims

Whether or not a crash results in criminal charges for one of those involved, families who have lost a loved one in a fatal collision may be able to file a wrongful death claim with the insurance provider of the at-fault driver.

The compensation provided by a wrongful death claim can relieve the financial burdens created by medical expenses, burial costs, and the loss of income to support any dependents of the deceased.

Insurance companies will work to reduce any claim they cannot deny, which is where the help of a knowledgeable personal injury attorney can prove invaluable by negotiating on behalf of victims and their families to ensure they receive proper compensation.
