Sacramento, CA – A suspected drunk driver caused a multi-vehicle crash in the Arden-Arcade area of Sacramento on Saturday evening, May 18, 2024, resulting in one fatality and several injuries, according to The Sacramento Bee.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the collision occurred on Fulton Avenue near Marconi Avenue at 5:37 PM, when a Toyota SUV, allegedly speeding, rear-ended a Dodge pickup truck. The impact sent the Dodge off the road, where it came to a stop poised precariously over the Chicken Ranch Slough canal. The Toyota continued forward to cross over into oncoming traffic and collided with a Volkswagen SUV.
The driver of the Dodge pickup, a man in his 50s, died at the scene, while his passenger was transported to the hospital for evaluation. Emergency crews had to secure the Dodge truck from falling into the Chicken Ranch Slough canal as they worked to safely extract both from the vehicle.
The Volkswagen driver, a woman in her 30s, suffered minor injuries and was also hospitalized. Her infant, who was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash, was taken to the hospital as a precaution but did not sustain any injuries.
The driver of the Toyota SUV, identified as a man in his 50s, received minor lacerations. After receiving medical treatment, he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and is expected to be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.
