Clovis, CA – On the night of Wednesday, May 15, 2024, a bicyclist was injured in a hit-and-run accident, and the Clovis Police are seeking information regarding the driver responsible, according to KSEE.

The incident occurred just before 11 PM at the intersection of Shaw Avenue and Peach Avenue, the bicyclist was riding through a gas station when a black car, moving through the commercial parking lot, collided with him. The force of the collision threw the bicyclist to the ground. The injured bicyclist, an adult male, was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Police report that the driver of the black car initially stopped after the collision but then chose to drive away without checking on the injured man. This act prompted the police to classify the incident as a felony hit-and-run.

The Clovis Police Department is urging anyone with information about the incident or the driver to come forward. They are committed to finding the individual responsible and ensuring accountability for the hit-and-run.

Duty of Care Toward Cyclists

Cyclists are owed a “duty of care” from drivers no matter where they meet. This legal responsibility stems from the fact that cyclists travel with less protection alongside heavier and faster cars, trucks, and SUVs. Motorists are legally obligated to monitor the roads ahead, and all mirrors and blind spots, for any rider who may be nearby. Drivers must hit the brakes to avoid any chance of a collision.

Drivers must also stop once a collision has occurred to get medical attention for a cyclist or pedestrian as fast as possible. Remaining on the scene, turning on hazard lights, and blocking off traffic also reduce the chances of the victim being struck by approaching motorists who may not be able to see an injured cyclist down in the street.
