Fresno, CA – Authorities have identified the pedestrian killed by a hit-and-run near Fresno’s Fashion Fair Mall on Friday night, May 3, 2024, as 31-year-old Shaylee Henry, according to KSEE.
At 8:25 PM, behind the baseball backstop at Cary Park, located near Fashion Fair, a car that had caught the attention of Fresno PD for driving without its lights on collided with the victims—Henry and a 30-year-old man. Henry was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the male pedestrian sustained critical injuries and was swiftly transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where he remains in critical but stable condition.
The pursuit of the suspect’s vehicle continued through the Fashion Fair parking lot until it came to a halt at Santa Ana Avenue and Thesta Street, where the vehicle became lodged between a pole and a tree. Two individuals fled the scene, and law enforcement is searching for their whereabouts.
The Fresno Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit has taken up the investigation into this tragic hit-and-run, diligently working to piece together the events leading up to the fatal collision.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Motorists are required to exercise an additional “duty of care” towards pedestrians due to their heightened vulnerability in car accidents, which more often result in pedestrian fatalities. Motorists are expected to stay with injured pedestrians to help secure help from emergency services and cooperate with authorities once they arrive.
Those who lose their loved one to a vehicular fatality should know that a Wrongful Death Claim, made with the help of a knowledgeable personal injury attorney, can provide compensation to address the financial burden of medical bills, burial fees, and the loss of income to support any dependents of the deceased
Should the at-fault driver escape justice, compensation may be available from a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine what the best options are.
