Webster, CA – According to KCRA, on Thursday afternoon, April 18, 2024, a bicyclist passed away after crashing into the arm of a metal gate on westbound I-80. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers responded to reports of a bicyclist colliding with a pole around 7 PM. Upon arriving at the scene near Chiles Road, officers discovered a man in his 60s deceased on the interstate highway.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the man struck a metal gate arm on the freeway for reasons yet unknown, leading to his collapse and subsequent passing. Notably, the man was part of a group of three bicyclists embarking on a 124-mile ride, with the crash occurring near the 121-mile mark.
Authorities are actively working to determine if the deceased individual had any pre-existing medical conditions that may have contributed to the tragic accident.
Wrongful Death Claims
Establishing fault in a collision can depend on multiple factors. Helping to determine legal liability is one of the ways that a personal injury attorney can help grieving families recovering from the loss of a loved one in a traffic accident.
In some cases, evidence can reveal that some portion for a single-vehicle fatality belongs to a party or parties outside of the driver, or in this case, the bicyclist. When this happens, the family of the deceased may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim with the insurance provider of the at-fault driver. A wrongful death claim can provide compensation to help cover hospital fees, burial costs, and the loss of support for dependents of the deceased.
