Sacramento, CA – A tragic incident along Fruitridge Road between Laurine Way and Lawrence Drive has resulted in the death of a man in a wheelchair and the injury of a woman with him, as reported by FOX40.

The collision occurred around 4 AM on Tuesday when a pickup truck collided with a man and a woman, either pedestrians on Fruitridge Road or attempting to cross the roadway. The man was in a wheelchair, and the woman was pushing it at the time of the collision.

First responders declared the man deceased at the scene, while the woman sustained significant injuries and was transported to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment.

The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and has been cooperating with law enforcement. There is currently no suspicion of the driver being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to initial reports.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

While no amount of money can bring back those who lose their lives in a vehicular fatality, the emotional burden of their loss is often accompanied by a financial burden that falls on their surviving family members.

Even in cases where criminal charges are not brought to bear, families who have lost a loved one in a fatal collision may be able to file a wrongful death claim with the insurance provider of those at fault.

The compensation provided by a wrongful death claim can relieve the financial burdens created by medical expenses, burial costs, and the loss of income to support any dependents of the deceased.

Those involved in a pedestrian crash should know that motorists are required to exercise an additional “duty of care” towards pedestrians due to their heightened vulnerability in car accidents, which more often result in pedestrian fatalities.

In cases where a driver is found responsible for a pedestrian fatality, the victim’s family may have grounds to initiate a wrongful death claim through the driver’s insurance provider.

Should the driver escape justice, compensation may be available from a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine what the best options are.
