Placer County, CA – According to the Sacramento Bee with additional reporting from KCRA, on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 6, 2024, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a big rig after leaving his vehicle parked on the side of Interstate 80.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) received word of the collision around 1 PM and arrived at the crash site to find traffic heavily impacted.

It is yet to be determined why the victim stopped his Toyota pickup on the right shoulder of westbound I-80 near King Road and stepped into oncoming traffic. Authorities believe he may have been a suspect in an earlier hit-and-run.

The vehicle that struck him was a 2020 Kenworth driven by a 23-year-old Penryn man who stopped and stayed at the scene following the accident.

Wrongful Death Claims

Establishing fault in a collision can depend on multiple factors. Helping to determine legal liability is one of the ways that a personal injury attorney can help grieving families recovering from the loss of a loved one in a traffic accident.

If it is determined that another driver holds responsibility for their loved one’s death, they may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim with the insurance provider of the at-fault driver. A wrongful death claim can provide compensation to help cover hospital fees, burial costs, and the loss of support for dependents of the deceased.
