Ventura, CA – US-101 came to a standstill following a head-on collision involving a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and a semi-truck just before 3 AM, January 5, 2024, according to the CHP.
A report of the sound of a crash coming from the highway near Dos Pueblos Canyon Road alerted the CHP, who dispatched a vehicle to investigate. When they arrived on the scene, officers found oil and debris strewn across the southbound lanes, the semi-truck overturned, and the Toyota fully engulfed in flame in the center divide.
Additional reporting from KSBY revealed that the driver of the semi was offered transport to the hospital but refused. His injuries were minor. The driver of the Toyota was declared dead at the scene.
Authorities initiated road closure efforts to clear the vehicles and debris, but some civilians attempted to maneuver around the safety cones and continue driving down the dangerous roadway.
The investigation is ongoing, and the parties involved have not been identified. There has been no indication of whether or not intoxication played a factor in the crash.
