San Diego, CA – Late in the evening of December 30, 2023, a 33-year-old Chula Vista man identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner as Abraham Jose Mungaray, 33, lost his life in a fatal accident on Interstate 5 near the Grand Avenue off-ramp.
According to the Times of San Diego, witnesses reported seeing the Mungaray’s Honda CRV crash through the guardrail and collide with a cement support pillar of the freeway bridge. The vehicle came to rest on its roof, facing the wrong way and partially resting against the support column. Details remain unclear as to why Mungaray lost control of his vehicle.
Emergency services were promptly alerted via 911 call, and first responders rushed to the location. Despite their swift arrival, the Mungaray’s injuries were deemed too severe for medical intervention, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
At this time, authorities continue to investigate the circumstances around the crash that caused the death of Abraham Jose Mungary.
Car Accident Liability and Wrongful Death
Thorough investigations are crucial post-accident, and liability may be assigned to another driver. Investigations can uncover reckless behaviors such as cutting off another vehicle to determine fault based on common law principles.
While a victim’s family might turn to services like GoFundMe to offset the cost of medical expenses, burial expenses, or the loss of future earnings from the deceased, they may instead be eligible to make a wrongful death claim against that driver’s insurance company, even if no criminal charges are filed.
