Four Car Pile-Up on Highway 101 in San Jose Injures at Least Three

Three people suffered injuries in a huge traffic pile-up in southeast San Jose early Monday morning. It happened along Highway 101 between the Tully Road and Capitol Expressway exits.

CBS Bay Area reported that the San Jose Fire Department posted about the accident at 5:12 a.m. on July 24, 2023. Fire officials said that the collision involved four vehicles in the southbound lanes.

Three people involved in the crash were taken to a local hospital for care. The conditions of the victims have not been released.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) shut down all six lanes of the southbound side of Highway 101. CHP investigators continue to work out just how the accident occurred.

Highway 101 Traffic Hazards in San Jose

Highway 101 can be a dangerous stretch of road, even when traffic is lighter in the early morning hours. Drivers can be looking at cell phones and may even be a bit drowsy and unfocused before the sun comes up. They may veer out of a lane or miss spotting a traffic slowdown ahead. They can cause a devastating collision before any other driver has a chance to react.

California’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) recorded 726 serious accidents (involving injury) on Highway 101 through San Jose and Santa Clara County in 2022. Those accidents led to at least 14 tragic fatalities in that time. The total number of accidents documented in 2022 was a dramatic jump from 2021 numbers when there were 556 crashes reported on Highway 101.

As 2023 unfolds there’s a chance for motorists to make a real effort to bring those accident numbers back down when they travel Highway 101 and other busy corridors in San Jose. It’s a goal worth pursuing because for each accident prevented, it’s another person that can return to their family safely by the end of the day.

A note about San Jose car accidents…

If you or a loved one was the victim of a car accident caused by a careless driver, you should be aware of the benefits available to you and your family through an insurance claim. Financial support from an at-fault driver’s car insurance provider is critical to protect victims and allow them to be able to afford the best medical care available.

Victims are encouraged to seek accident support and can receive car insurance settlement money even if an at-fault driver is found to be uninsured.
