A Monday afternoon motorcycle accident in northern Modesto sent one rider to the hospital. The Modesto Police Department responded to the frightening crash along Standiford Avenue on July 17, 2023.
ABC10-TV reports that the accident happened just after 3 p.m. as the driver of a car was leaving the shopping center at 200 Standiford Avenue, near Target. Police investigators say the driver was turning left out of the parking lot onto Standiford when it hit the westbound motorcyclist.
The rider was rushed to a local hospital in critical but stable condition. Police officers continue to investigate what happened.
They don’t believe drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. They ask anyone with information about the collision to call the Modesto Police Department.
Motorcycle Accident Dangers in Modesto
Motorcyclists are often most at risk when careless drivers are making turns. Anxious drivers can look for a break in traffic to enter a busy road, but they don’t always take a long enough look in both directions. They can see that cars have passed but miss the smaller profile of an approaching rider. A devastating collision occurs when the defenseless motorcyclist doesn’t have the time to avoid the full length of a turning vehicle.
California’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) revealed that Modesto recorded at least 69 motorcycle accidents involving injury in 2022. Those accidents led to at least one death for the year. Those numbers were down a bit from 2021 figures when five Modesto motorcyclists lost their lives with at least 80 serious motorcycle accidents documented.
Even with a slight improvement, Modesto drivers need to pay real attention to the safety of motorcyclists on every street and highway in Stanislaus County. This is the only hope we have to see Modesto motorcycle accident rates fall through 2023 and allow more and more riders to return from their rides safely.
